If you are like many cyclists you would rather keep riding through the cold winter nights as opposed to joining a gym. That's good thinking but if you are new to spinning or indoor bike trainers, then you will quickly see that it can be quite boring. in fact, watching paint dry might be exciting compared to plodding away on a bike trainer. Unless of course, you are prepared with some cool workout DVDs that are designed to keep your attention, keep you entertained and work you out all while making you not even notice the minutes pass by.

One of the best names in the business when it comes to training DVDs there isn't much better than the series from Spinervals. If you haven't heard of this series then they have a wide range of DVDs that are custom designed to tailor a certain part of your workout and they keep you working the entire time.

This review is of Spinervals 1.0 No Slackers Allowed. Spinervals rates this workout a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10 for intensity but this will vary depending on your current level of conditioning. If you're a bit of a butterball then this could be an 18 on a scale of 1 to 10 and if you are in shape then it might seem like a 5 to you. It's all relative.

Spinervals 1.0 Slackers Summary

The basic run down of the way this DVD breaks out is that you start with a warm-up that is approximately five or six minutes long followed by a one minute cool-down. This leads you into a set at which you are instructed to maintain a moderate cadence for five minutes as you work through your gears. You follow this with what is called a "super spin", basically this requires that you pedal your little heart out and maintain a cadence of 120+ for 30 seconds. A short cool down precedes a 10 second 100% effort sitting, 10 second soft pedal, 10 second 100% effort standing set. This will quickly get your heart pumping if it isn't already and then after this comes a hard 5 minute prologue simulation.

As if this isn't enough, you now are led through another "super spin" set and then finally a cool-down. You'll need it at this stage because you will be burning. The goal of Spinervals is not to kill you, even though you will be convinced it's an evil plot about half way through but really if you can't follow the leaders instructions then choose the gear that works for you and take the extr time to spin easy between sets if you must. Before you know it, you will quickly be up to speed and maximizing the most of your indoor bike trainer.
