Kurt Kinetic Road Machine Rider Review
To many cyclists an indoor bike trainer is a necessary evil in order to stay in shape over the winter months. It might keep your legs and lungs tuned up and it will do the job, but no matter what, it's no substitute for the real thing. Even the best bike trainers on the market can't replace the thrill of the wind in your hair and the everchanging scenery or the freedom that a bike will give you.
Now that said, the best bike trainers on the market are a HUGE improvement over some of the worst and while your brain might realize it's not on the road, your legs and lungs will hardly tell the difference if you are on a high quality bike trainer. The Kurt Kinetic Road Machine bike trainer is easily one of the best I've ever ridden that simulates true road feel and resistance. It might not be the real thing but a hard workout session on a Kinetic Road Machine will leave you felling pretty satisfied.
You might be able to tell, I am not the biggest fan of riding indoors but when it's dark at 4pm and it's freezing cold outside, you do what you have to do. As skeptical as I am, I must admit that I was actually excited when I unpacked the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine for the first time. Their reputation is strong and I just like new stuff...it's a curse so sue me.
Kurt Kinetic Initial Impressions
The very first thing you notice when you pop the top on that box is that raging "viper" green color that the Kurt Kinetic trainers are finished with. The other thing was damn, this sucker was heavy. The Kurt Kinetic trainer is a beast, it's solid, rugged and heavy. These might not be good attributed for a bicycle, but they are GREAT attributes for a trainer. You want a big, wide and stable platform to mount your bike into and much of the weight comes from the flywheel, the heavier the flywheel then the more realistic the ride feel so immediately I had high hopes.
Giggling with excitement, I wasted no time in loading my trusty Trek 5900SL into the trainer and was happy to see that it loads with ease. The Kinetic requires no pre-adjustment and you simply slide the self-locking knob inward until it makes contact and then tighten it down. The only downside to loading the bike is when you tighten the resistance unit to the bike wheel, it's not horrible but the knob is small and hard to reach. I prefer the foot operated levers but that's life. It's not that big of a deal, just not as easy as loading the bike into the frame.
Kurt Kinetic Trainer Riding Impressions
Ok, now we RIDE! I popped one of the Lance's TDF victories into the trainer and off I go. First impression was great, the Kurt Kinetic is not noisy and was actually pretty quiet and the base being insulated in rubber did not result in a lot of noise translated through the floor. The flywheel spun up nice and smoothly under my shoes and did feel very road like. The noise issue may not seem important to some, but if you are an apartment or condo dweller then the noise issue can be huge, especially to your neighbors.
Five minutes of easy spinning later and I was ready to rock, Lance would never know what was coming when I got done with him, plus I cheat and hit pause on the DVD long enough for me to get by him. The base Kurt Kinetic Road Machine comes equipped 6-pound flywheel and it does an admirable job of providing a very smooth resistance all the way around the pedal stroke. The Road Machine spins up up quickly, but still provides enough inertial in the flywheel to also provide a very realistic coast down as well, something many trainer lack and many buyers overlook. A smooth and lengthy coast down allows you to train the same way you ride on the road. You can coast and rest on the road without scrubbing too much speed and you can do the same thing on the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine, many trainers scrub speed quickly, which is not very realistic.
Kurt Kinetic Trainer Summary
Forty Five minutes later and with Lance feeling kind of vulnerable all of a sudden , we hopped off the Kurt Kinetic trainer with an absolute appreciation of why many Kinetic owners claim they will never own a different trainer again. It works great, feels great, looks great and is just a great all around choice for someone looking for a trainer.
If you are worried about the reputation of a Fluid trainer then have no fear of that as the design of the Kurt Kinetic trainers is such that they cannot leak. It simply won't happen and this should give those who have had bad experiences with other fluid trainers some piece of mind. In fact, Kurt Kinetic has so much confidence in their bike trainer that they offer an unconditional lifetime warranty.

| I purchased the Kurt Kenetic two months ago, and am thrilled with its performance and quality. If you are considering purchasing a trainer, fluid trainers are the way to go. Basically, there are four major types of trainers: Magnetic,Wind, Rim Driven, and Fluid. The later is the best, hands down! Fluid resistance trainers are more quiet, smoother and more realistic than any of the others mentioned. The only drawback to the fluid trainer is that over time they can leak resistance fluid. There are three companies that have solutions to this drawback. I highly recommend that you research all three and test them out where possible. A good review page is Roadbikereview.com . The CycleOps Fluid 2 is ultra smooth and quiet. They have a limmited warranty on thier products, but are known for standing behind their trainers for life, and will fix any issues probably for life! The One Up Trainer has all the advantages of a fluid trainer, but uses no fluid in its designe, it is made in America and carries a life time warranty. The Kurt Kinetic, which I decided to purchase, is IMHO, the best because it utilizes a sealed fluid unit and therefore is guranteed not to leak. These three units are roughly the same price, around $260.00. Steep? Think of it this way, This product is going to be your companion for many winters, so don't buy a loud, crappy one with crappy customer service! You'll regret later that you didn't spend the extra $75 or $80 on a quality product. I also tested the Blackburn Fluid, $100 bucks cheaper, not bad for price, but since it is new to the market I was unsure about durabillity or how well they stand behind thier trainers after warranty expiration. I have heard amazing testimonials of how Cyclops, Kurt, and One Up, have replaced parts and even whole trainers, no questions asked! Google these three companies and see for yourself. |

| I have had several other trainers of this type that were used by my son and myself for training on Road, Mountain, and Recumbent. This one is the best. From the moment you heft it out of the shipping carton until you set it up you know this is quality and not like all the others. It is BUILT strong.
I am 6'3" and 215 lbs. This trainer acts like I'm not there. The greatest feature is the quietness with which it operates. You can watch the Spinerval DVD or TV and not have to be blasted off the seat. Bike mounting on the trainer is straight and very simple while being very secure. I love it and use it regularly with great results. |

| I got this trainer thinking that it would be a good workout for days when I was too lazy to carry my bike downstairs or go to the gym. I've taken spinning classes for a few years, and never thought that using a trainer would produce a workout as intense as my classes. This trainer definitely does.
I've never used another one, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I LOVE this trainer. Keeping the resistance up will give you a great workout and you can use your gears modify the resistance while riding. It remains stable even when I stand up on it. Overall, I just love it. It's quiet, easy to use, and takes up minimal space. |

The Kurt Kinetic Road Machine is an excellent trainer. I wanted a fluid trainer for the ride quality but I was a little bit leary of the stories of leakage. The Kurt Kinetic is designed as such that it cannot leak, and the ride quality is dynamite.
I would definitely recommend the Kurt Kinetic bike trainer to someone looking for a premium trainer. It’s quiet, it has great road feel and it will really work your butt out.
Picked one of these up a month ago at daylight savings time…I am too much of a sissy to ride in the cold.
While I DESPISE riding a trainer indoors, it beats the alternative for me, and this trainer ROCKS compared to the cheap POS I had before. It’s quiet, solid and I love the way it feels compared to the cheap POS I had before. The ride feels more like riding my own bike than a trainer.
Buy this one…don’t buy the cheap POS.
I got this Kurt Kinetic Road Machine trainer for Christmas from my girlfriend. I’ve had a few of the cheaper sporting goods stores type trainers in the past and never ended up using them because I hated the way they felt riding indoors.
The Kurt Kinetic is light years ahead of those things and I am so glad she got it for me. I really want to hit the road in Spring STILL in shape, in fact, in even better shape than when I left off last fall.
I would definitely recommend this trainer. You are still inside, which sucks, but this trainer is as close to real riding feel as I have experienced.
