Kinetic Pro Review
~This review provided by Best Mountain Bikes Online.
Brrrrrrr.... when the weather turns cold and frosty outside and you start running out of daylight, then it's time to start thinking about how you are going to keep your deeply chiseled glutes and quads from turning into marshmellow from inactivity. As I write this, it's cold outside, in fact it's so cold that my driveway is coated in ice and it's the kind of air that hurts if you take too deep of a breath.
I would love to go for a ride but my hatred of frigid cold outweighs my love of riding and combine that with ice and road bike tire and you can see why I am staying home. I recently upgraded my bicycle trainer and I wanted to share my thoughts.....let me introduce you to my little friend, the Kurt Kinetic Pro trainer.
Bike Trainers - Evil or Great
My experience with bicycle trainers has ebbed and flowed over the years, I have tried on a number of occasions to fall in love with riding a trainer but to date I have not succeeded. I have even been desperate enough to try attending a "trainer ride" at my local bike shop where all of the roadies meet in the evening and ride the trainer, longing for warm weather and daylight. While the social aspect was fun, it was still a chore and I had always been using a cheap trainer. Because I hated it, I never invested any money into a more expensive trainer as I didn't see the point.
One of my riding buddies raved about how good his trainer was but I ignored him for the most part until one day I decided to ride his bright green love machine. What's this you say.....could it be....yes it could be. This bike trainer was an entirely different animal right from the start and I knew that I had just passed one of those milestones in life where you get a lot smarter than you were a few minutes ago. Not all trainers have to stink, just the cheap POS trainers that I had been riding had stunk.
So I wasted no time in slapping down some coin for a Kurt Kinetic Pro Trainer and getting to work. I'd been loafing on my other trainer and I had work to do. The Kurt Kinetic Pro trainer is STILL a trainer, sure, but I find myself willing to ride it for longer periods of time and working harder because I felt good about my trainer choice. I believed that it was working better and therefore put in more time in the saddle.
Kurt Kinetic Pro Riding Impressions
What's cool about the Kurt Kinetic pro is that it feels like you are really riding on the road. The design of the flywheel is very smooth and it provides similar feedback as a real bike. It powers up to speed like a real bike AND what I didn't realize I was missing on other trainers is that the Kinetic Pro design features a long slow coast down without scrubbing speed. When you ride on the road, you pedal pedal pedal and then coast to recover. Many trainers scrub speed so quickly that you almost stop the trainer and then to get back up to speed, you need to power it up again. This is not realistic NOR is it conducive to training your muscles to road riding.
The Kurt Kinetic Pro generates MUCH less noise and is far quieter than the Mag trainer I was riding and was equally as quiet as any of the fluid trainers present on "trainer night" at the bike shop. A techie (nerd) friend of mine explained that the Kurt Kinetic design is such that it will not leak as many other fluid trainers are known for as well. No leaks, quiet, real road feel.....so far so good.
One of the really cool features of the Kurt Kinetic Pro model is that the ride is interchangeable. It comes with an additional 12lb flywheel that you can install on the trainer and you can train the long hard stroke that is required when climbing or sprinting. Men and boys are seperated on the hills and the Kinetic Pro will transform your cycling game if you put the time in.
The dull and boring stuff about the Kurt Pro trainer is something I will also address. It is a big and solid trainer that is very heavy. It's much more stable than some trainers I have been on but it's also heavier than many trainers I have been on. If you are going to be moving your trainer around a lot then you want to take your vitamins but most sit stationary in a workout room somewhere. I am exaggerating a little bit of course, it's quite mobile actually but it is a heavy trainer. I am a Clydesdale so when I go out of the saddle and put the hammer down, most trainers will flex and sway, not the Kurt. Rock solid.
Loading a bike into the Kurt Kinetic Pro is simple and it works well. The only beef I have is that the knob for the tension wheel to put tension on the rear tire is a little small for my taste but if that's all I have to complain about then I guess Kurt is doing ok.
Kurt Kinetic Pro Trainer Review Summary
So after all is said and done, I am extremely pleased with the Kurt Kinetic Pro bike trainer. It was more expensive than the last bike trainer I was riding but it was worth every nickel. If you are looking to maximize your training time and you don't mind spending a little bit of money to get something nice then the Kurt Kinetic Pro Trainer is a great choice for most cyclists.
Thumbs up to Kurt Kinetic for making an awesome bike trainer.
